ICC Women World Cup: India beat England in its World Cup opener

India beat England by 35 runs in its first women’s world cup match at Derby. The Indian Openers Smriti Mandhana and Poonam Raut scored a brilliant 144 run partnership paying the way for a strong total to defend. Riding on strong batting display by openers wherein Smriti scored 90 of 72 balls while Poonam scored 86, and along with Mithali Raj’s 71, Team India posted a world record chase of 282 for the host team. Earlier in the day, England won the toss and elected to field first.

While on chase, England collapsed for 246 while still 2 more overs left. Middle order batswoman Fran Wilson scored highest for England with 81 off 102 balls. Indian fielders showed some exceptional fielding skills while sending back four England players Run-out.

Player of the match was awarded to Smriti Mandhana for her blitzkrieg performance.

“Half of the overs in the 1st innings were played by the openers”, said Mithali Raj after the game. “If you have a solid opening partnership, your middle order will come exactly when it is supposed to come and carry on from there. That makes it much easier to post 250 and above.”

With this win India began its World cup campaign on a high note. Next match for India is with West Indies on 29th June.
