World Vitiligo Day

June 25th was World Vitiligo day. Vitiligo is a disease of the skin characterized by depigmentation of the part of the skin. It is a disorder in which white patches of skin appear on different parts of the body. This happens because the cells that make pigment (color) in the skin are destroyed. These cells are called melanocytes (ma-LAN-o-sites). Vitiligo can also affect the mucous membranes (such as the tissue inside the mouth and nose) and the eye.This disease is incurable taking social and emotional toll on the patients,the most famous example being Michael Jackson, the King of pop.It affects nearly 100 million worldwide.

 

World Vitiligo day on 25th June is observed with the purpose of creating awareness about the disease because this has negative social and psychological effects on the patients. The idea of World Vitiligo Day was first conceived by Mr.Steve Haragadon, President of Vitiligo Friends Network and then finalized by Mr. Ogo Maduewesi, a Nigerian Vitiligo patient. The aim of this day is to fight various misconceptions about this disease and to better the lives of Vitiligo patients.The first World Vitiligo Day was observed in the year 2011,June 25thas Vitiligo Awareness Dayor Vitiligo Purple Fun Day.
